  • Mexico no longer produces a 500 peso coin, so the one you have dates back to the late 1980s or so. This means it's 500 old pesos, which is only worth one half of one new peso, and that converts to 2.5 cents in US dollars.

The H family writes: We have found a Mexican coin. On it is as follows: On the front it has $100 and the date 1984. On the back of it is Estados Unidos Mexicanos. Can you tell me about this coin and what is worth? Thanks in advance.

A brass 1 peso pattern coin was struck by the Mexican Mint in 1980. The coat of arms of Mexico and the words 'ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS' are featured on the obverse. A left-facing image of an eagle warrior, a special class of soldier in the Aztec army, and a pyramid of Tenochtitlan is displayed on the reverse. The word 'TENOCHTITLAN' is inscribed in small print above the eagle warrior, and the date. Coins: ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. UCoin.net is an International Catalog of World Coins.

The Mexican peso uses a similar monetary sign as the US$ so everyone uninitiated thinks they've found a bonanza. The Mexico 1984 100 pesos was minted during a particular nasty inflation period. At that time 3,400 pesos =$1US. I think these coins are still spendable in Mexico, at least they were a short while ago. When they printed new money they simply removed two zeros. So your 100 peso would be equal to 1 new peso or about 12 cents in US currency.
